The Eames Elephant (plywood) is a remarkable design object first conceived in 1945 by iconic designers Charles and Ray Eames during their pioneering experiments with moulded plywood, a technique that defined much of their mid-century work. Although the original toy elephant was never produced in series at the time, a prototype was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946 and remains preserved in the Eames family archive. Decades later, Vitra revived this beloved design — issuing a limited edition in 2007 to celebrate Charles Eames’s centenary and then commencing regular serial production. Today the piece is available in refined plywood with natural lacquered finishes in chestnut or European walnut, bringing a blend of sculptural elegance and playful charm to interiors.
